History
This string vest was part of the standard cold weather issue of clothing. It was introduced early in the war as part of the layered clothing system. The string vest was worn against the skin with other clothing overtop during cold periods and the warmth created by the body remained trapped in the baffles. It could also be worn over top of a shirt in hot weather ,as it would wick the sweat from the body and allow it to evaporate, removing heat through convection.
